Part 4: Why Do I Start Things and Not Finish Them?
Do you notice a pattern where things start well and then suddenly you just can’t keep going?
You begin with energy and enthusiasm. You feel like a race car! Zooming past obsticles, punching out the work, productivity +++ You’re focused, organised, getting things done.
Then something changes.
Tasks feel heavier.
Starting the next task becomes harder.
Things that felt easy now feel impossible.
For many adults with ADHD, this loss of momentum isn’t random and over time, this familiar pattern can lead to frustration and self-doubt.
What’s actually happening
ADHD affects how attention and energy are regulated.
Periods of high focus can use a lot of mental energy very quickly.
Once that drops, it can feel like everything has stopped, even when nothing is actually “wrong.”
What helps
Work with the shift, not against it.
Momentum will change so planning for a drop in energy and interest makes things more sustainable.
Make restarting easier than starting by lower the entry point so it’s easier to come back. That means, start with the smallest or easiest thing first.
Expect and plan for inconsistency. It’s part of the pattern, not a personal failure.
Closing thought
Losing momentum doesn’t mean you’ve failed.
It usually means your energy has shifted.
Understanding that shift is often the first step to working with it, rather than against it.
